ABOUT ALPHA KAPPA DELTA at UPenn

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the International Sociology Honor Society. It was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California by Dr. Emory S. Bogardus and became affiliated with the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) in 1967. AKD is also affiliated with the American Sociological Association (ASA). The overall purpose of Alpha Kappa Delta is to seek to acknowledge and promote excellence in the scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition. AKD currently has more than 120,000 members and over 600 chapters across the world.

Alpha Kappa Delta also has a quarterly journal, Sociological Inquiry, which is currently published by Wiley-Blackwell. Sociological Inquiry is committed to the exploration of the human condition in all of its social and cultural complexity. New members receive one free year of Sociological Inquiry and all members who renew their memberships receive a yearly copy of the journal. Sociological Inquiry is available in both print and online.

At the University of Pennsylvania, we are the Epsilon Chapter of Pennsylvania (Epsilon of PA). Our specific purpose is to create a strong community within the Sociology Department among the undergraduate and graduate communities and incentivize academic performance among undergraduate and graduate Sociology students.

More information on the history of Alpha Kappa Delta can be found on the AKD national chapter’s home page, listed here.
